artist statement
‘우리의 DNA를 이루고 있는 성분들, 우리의 치아를 이루고 있는 칼슘 우리의 몸을 돌고 있는 피 속의 철 성분들. 이 모든 것들은 붕괴되고 있는 별들의 성분과 다름이 아니다. 우리는 모두 우주의 별가루들이며 우리는 모두 우주의 한 조각을 몸속에 품고 있다.’ –칼 세이건.

생명의 기원은 우주에서 날아온 포자일지도 모른다는, 그리고 지구와 우주를 구별하는 것이 무의미하게 우리와 먼 우주는 같은 것으로 이루어져 있다는 칼 세이건의 ‘코스모스’를 읽던 날을 나는 아직 기억하고 있다. 세상이 나를 중심으로 펼쳐져 있는 것이 아닌 내가 우주 속의 티끌 같은 존재가 되어 거대한 공간에 던져져 붕 떠있는 기분. ‘죽어서 땅속에 묻혀 흙이 된다.’는 것은 영원히 헤어져 다시 만날 수 없는 것이 아닌 그저 원래 있었던 것으로 돌아가는 것이니 결국 진정한 의미의 이별은 어디에도 없는 게 아닐까.라는 생각을 하며 읽던 책을 그대로 가슴에 펼쳐놓은 채 전기장판에 오래도록 누워있다 잠이 든 어느 겨울날의 오후는 아직도 선명하고도 기묘한 기억으로 남아있다. 그때는 이해하기 힘든 말들로 가득했던 두꺼운 책 속의 한 부분이 당시 어린 마음에 가지고 있던 죽음에 대한 공포를 차분히 가라앉혀 주었다.
그 당시의 하루하루는 아이에게는 참 길게 느껴져서 인생 역시 매우 긴 것 같았었지만 지금 생각해 보면 매우 짧은 유년인 것 같은 것을 보면 시간의 길이는 상대적이다. 하나의 생과 그 시간은 살아내기에는 길고, 기억하기에는 매우 짧은 것처럼, 유구한 인류의 역사 역시 지구의 관점에서 보면 찰나와 같이 짧은 시간일 것이며 그 지구 역시 광대한 우주 속에서 태어났으며 가늠하기 힘든 시간 후 죽음을 맞이할 것이다. 그리고 그 시간 속에는 수많은 우연과 필연이 교차하며 이들은 잠시 만났다 사라져 간다.
여수의 바닷가 매립지의 공사현장, 컨베이어 벨트에서 쉼 없이 빠르게 떨어져 내리는 돌들은 마치 시끄러운 소리를 내는 검은 커튼 같았다. 어떤 모습으로 떨어져 내리는지 궁금해 그 모습을 빠른 셔터스피드로 촬영해 보니 그 현상은 8천 분의 1초가 되어서야 그 움직임을 멈추었다. ‘떨어진다’는 현상이 마치 ‘붕 떠있는’것처럼 역전된 그곳에는 내가 어린 시절 칼 세이건을 읽으며 느꼈던 우주가 펼쳐있었다. 내가 카메라로 잡아서 끌어내 주지 않으면 보이지 않기에 없는 것인 그 장면은 저 먼 우주 어딘가에서 바라본 우리의 생과 같았다. 이후 고속 연사 방식으로 매년 수만 장의 떨어지는 돌을 촬영 후 떨어지는 현상의 우연과 촬영이라는 의도적인 행위가 지니는 필연이 교차하는 순간에 드러나는 인지 범위 밖의 숨겨진 아름다움을 드러낼 수 있는 프레임을 매해 대략 10장에서 15장씩 찾아 프린트하는 과정을 거쳐 매년 Float프로젝트를 진행해 오고 있다.

모든 순간, 모든 현상들을 ‘있음’과 ‘없음’ 사이를 끊임없이 진동한다. 그 진동 사이의 아주 짧은 허공과 정적. 떨어져 내리는 운명과 시간을 초월한, 카메라의 눈으로만 볼 수만이 있는 흔들림 없는 현상의 모습. 어떠한 생과 현상의 현재는 문맥에서 벗어났을 때 이렇게 초월적이다. 우리를 이루고 있는 것, 우리의 주변을 이루고 있는 것이 신비한 우주와 다름 아니며 무수히 많은 꿈과 같은 순간의 시간들이 모여 우리의 생을 이룬다. 그리고 우리의 생은 이렇게 우주의 시간과 공간 어딘가를 부유하고 있는 것이다.
