artist statement
Parallax 시리즈는 사진을 매체로 사용하여 재현된 경관 이미지와 이를 바탕으로 형성된 경관인식이 현실 경관인식에 미치는 영향을 고찰하는 것을 목표로 하는 시각예술 작업이다.

작가는 현실 경관과 재현된 경관 이미지에 대한 인식 수준에 따라 경관이 다르게 해석되는 사회적 현상을 기존의 Parallax(시차)라는 개념을 나름의 방식으로 확장 및 변형하여 해석하고자 한다. 작품의 주제이자 제목인 Parallax(시차)는 대상을 사실적으로 재현하는 사진의 피상적 특징에 가리어 이미지에 정착되지 못하고 표류하는 것처럼 오인하기 쉽도록 조직되어 있다. 그러나 이는 의도된 것으로 실제 경관과 재현된 경관이라는 본질적으로 다르다는 것부터, 실제 경관과 재현된 경관을 해석하는 것은 해석하는 사람에 따라 다를 수 있다는 점, 그리고 재현된 경관은 기본적으로 실제 경관이 속해있는 맥락으로부터 분리되었다는 차이 등 주제의식을 전달하는 언어적 정보이자 기호로서 작용한다. 하지만 대상을 사실적으로 묘사하는 사진의 피상적 특징은 그 이면에 있는 다른 특성들을 인식하는 것을 방해한다. 이것이 바로 사진으로 재현된 대상의 이미지는 실제 대상에 대한 정보를 직관적으로 전달하는 것처럼 보이지만 사진으로 재현된 대상은 결코 대상의 본질을 대신할 수 없다는 역설(Paradox)을 의미한다. 결국 대상의 본질은 시각적 재현으로 전달 될 수 없으며 대상이 속한 맥락 안에서 종합적으로 판단되어야 한다는 것을 의미한다.

작가는 이러한 생각을 기초로 하여 매체로서의 “사진”의 기록성과 재현성, 그리고 시간과 장소를 특정하여 고정시키는 특징을 활용하여 자연화되어 탈 맥락화 되어가는 경관의 모습을 기록하는 작업을 통하여 인간과 공간 그리고 시간이 만들어내는 경관의 본질적 의미를 추적하고 있다. 비록 사진이라는 매체가 3차원의 현실 속에 존재하는 대상을 2차원의 평면으로 변형하여 재현하는 불완전성을 가지고 있지만, 실제 존재했던 경관 그리고 여기에 촬영자의 의도가 투영되어 재현된 시각 이미지 그리고 이렇게 시각적으로 재현된 경관을 능동적으로 재인식하려는 노력이 지속된다면 현대사회를 구성하는 본질적인 가치를 보다 깊이 있게 이해할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
